Call your Congressman! Ask for a tour!
Thank you Representative John Shimkus (R, IL) and your staffers Christian and Mark, for an awesome tour of the US Capitol.
John is a friend and West Point classmate. Although he was back in his district while we visited, his staff was most welcoming, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Christian made sure we were all set up for the White House and Capitol tours, and followed up to see if we had questions. Mark was a font of interesting historical information, and he handled all of our many questions expertly.

Mt. Vernon was not on Bobby's list, but we thought we'd surprise him with the "National Treasure" tour at the 1st President's home. The movie is a favorite of his (and ours!). We heard about filming in 20 degree weather, what was real and what was fabricated, and that the crew had to keep sets and equipment out of sight until after visiting hours everyday. They did slip in lots of additional information- it was worth the extra $5.

We ended the day at the waterfront, as we learned that Washington was fairly innovative for his time, he saw himself first as a farmer who took some time away to help found our new country, and that Maryland owns all the water in the river.
