Murfreesboro, NC v. 51

 Go Chowan!

If it looks like we zig-zagged back and across the Southeast, thank Hurricane Sandy and flexible schedules.  We have missed some of the East Coast, but there will be time in later years...

We spent some time with our long time friends, Den and Sue Helsel.  Some people have told us that we are pretty good parents.  Along with Kay and Bob Meyer and John and Marie Calhoon, Dennis and Sue Helsel have been our models of responsible and loving parenthood from the time I met them at West Point in 1977, and Bob met them in 1980.  If we are any good at all, thank those folks! Quality people.

So we were driving along rural roads in northeast North Carolina, and we kept seeing these white puffs on the end of sticks, and blowing around the roads.  Then I got the "Jump up turn around pick a bale of cotton" song stuck in my head.  I never saw cotton in the field before!

We arrived in the thriving metropolis (not!) of Murfreesboro, NC. . Den is the Athletic Director at Chowan University.  Duties of family and visitors alike include going to whatever game or match is going on.  We became instant Chowan Hawks fans and had a blast!  We even decided to stay a few extra days and saw the student production of Alice in Wonderland -very well done!

Sue and Becca played Wii.  She is much better than I am...

Jamestown and Williamsburg are not too far away, so we took a day to tour with Sue.

We participated in a day in the courtroom at Colonial Williamsburg.  Becca wasn't old enough to be a plaintiff or judge, so I took my turn as a widow whose tobacco crop had been ruined by a merchant's negligence.  It was almost as good as if she could participate herself.
In the stocks!
With the magistrate.
The last thing we did- maybe the most fun, and definitely a highlight for Rebecca- was help Sue prepare for a baby shower.  We made a diaper cake and filled it with whoppers (:}- the candy kind).  Rebecca had lots of suggestions on everything from games to decorations.

Bob and Dennis celebrated Veteran's Day hitting golf balls many times more than par... and getting a free meal at Applebee's.  Bob said something about Den's offset club making his drives go sideways... hmm...

Fun was had by all!
