We keep running across the Appalachian Trail as we zigzag the southeastern US. Here in the Smoky Mountains, we hiked a steep, but short (half mile), trail to Clingman's Dome. It is the highest point in the Smokies in Tennessee, third highest in the USA east of the Mississippi River, and also the highest point on the Georgia to Maine Appalachian Trail.
I felt pretty good as I passed a few twenty-somethings commenting that they thought they were in pretty good shape, but they had to sit and rest before they could go on. Then of course you have the three year old running up the path with frantic parents trying to keep up.

We went to Clingman's Dome specifically for the sunset. We were not alone...
There were at least 100 people, speaking many languages (with lots of advanced equipment!), who enjoyed the spectacular colors with us.

As the sun set:
I'll stop here and write about Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge separately. They are right next door, but so very different, I have to draw a line here!
