Rafting and Kayaking in Salida, CO v. 18

Rafting and Kayaking gets its own page...  It is so much fun!
We chose an outfitter that let us choose our activities- we thought back in June that we would be doing climbing and mountain biking.  By the time we got here, rafting and kayaking (in inflatable "duckies") on the rapids in the Arkansas river were much higher on our fun list.  The biggest downside was putting this 54 year old body in a wetsuit (try to block that image- replace it with a much younger and more "toned" body).

showing off Bob's chest hair :)
We had our adventure on Saturday, and there had been a flash flood that Tuesday.  Becca mentioned that she was interested and Josh, our guide, had studied Geology,  so along the way he pointed out how the river had changed from the flash flood.  We called it  "Geology in Action" - not in the brochure, but Josh was on it!  We also had the benefit of rafting with 2 of Josh's college friends.  When Becca fell out of the raft, one of them followed on her lifeguard's instinct.  Becca said she would have been fine, but we weren't so sad that she swam the rapid with Bec!
re-enacting the "rescue"!

We kayaked in the morning, and gave Josh the camera for a while.  Becca's highlight was Bob falling out of the kayak at a rapid, Josh scrambling to catch him and falling out as well, and she rescued all of their paddles!  That was a sight- Bob and Josh flailing around trying to avoid the biggest rocks!

In between adventures, Becca did a little hair sculpting for Dad.

We rafted in the afternoon, and included a few leaps from "jump rock".

Our "crew"!

Some folks have asked that I include the companies we used, so I'll try to remember to do that.  Our outfitter was the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center: 14825 Hwy 285, Salida, CO 81201

They were great, and really strove to meet our needs.
SO FUN!
